A car can be one of the most important and costly purchases you’ll make. Careful research and preparation will not only help make the buying process easier, but will also help you get the best deal and vehicle.
First, you should determine how much you can afford. Take a careful look at your budget and establish how much you can spend as a down payment and on monthly payments, gas and maintenance.
Once you’ve decided your price range, determine the type of vehicle you want and whether it’ll be new or used. Don’t narrow your decision to one car.
Next, find a reputable auto dealer. The Better Business Bureau processed more than 130 complaints dealing with new car dealers in 2009, ranking the industry third on the BBB’s top 10 list of complaints. Ask friends and family to recommend dealers. You can also get lists of BBB Accredited auto dealers. Visit www.bbb.org or call (937) 222-5825 or (800) 776-5301.
The BBB and the U.S. General Services Administration’s 2009 Consumer Action Handbook offers more tips:
• Shop several dealers to compare selection, price and service.
• Test drive vehicles and pay attention to characteristics, including interior and trunk space, visibility, and steering.
• Check Consumer Reports, Motor Trend, Car and Driver and Edmunds for information on new vehicle performance, service and safety information. Get used car information from the National Automobile Dealer Association, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Center for Auto Safety and CARFAX.
• Shop around for financing.
• Have used vehicles thoroughly inspected by trustworthy mechanics.
• Don’t be pressured into making an immediate decision.
• Read and understand the contract thoroughly before signing. And, get a signed statement verifying mileage at the time of sale on used vehicles.
