Family to sell antique car collection

DES MOINES, Iowa —A slice of Des Moines' automotive history will be going on the auction block this summer when the antique car collection of the late Charles Gabus goes up for sale.

From a turn-of-the-century Model T to a 1940 convertible, it is easy to see that the former Ford dealer not only sold Fords, he loved them, said KCCI reporter Todd Magel.

"Yeah, he loved cars," said Gene Gabus, the owner's son. "He loved the old ones."

Five years after Gabus' death, his family is putting his prized collection on the market, including a 1915 Brass T, a Model A five-window coupe, a sunset coral 1956 Thunderbird, a '59 Thunderbird, a '68 Mustang convertible and a '72 LTD convertible.

"You need to drive them to keep them going and stuff," the younger Gabus said. "We just don't have a place to put them out to where the public can enjoy them."

All the cars, including a 1940 Deluxe coupe, have been restored and are ready to drive. The proceeds from the sale will go to charity.

"We're going to donate the money to the five-star museum at Camp Dodge," Gabus said.

The Gabus car collection will be sold on July 19 at the Mecum Auction at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
